Green Long March Volunteers Celebrate Opening Ceremony by Planting Trees at Fang ShanApril 4, 2009

On Saturday, April 4th, nearly 200 Green Long March volunteers gathered at Fang Shan, in western Beijing, to plant over 200 trees and mark the start of 2009 activities. Volunteers present included students, university leaders, government officials, as well as the children from a Beijing Xiwang School; all worked hard to carry on the spirit of the Green Olympics and actively prepare for celebrations that will commemorate sixty years since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

At the strat of the event, volunteers took the Green Long March Oath promising to commit to greener living and champion the environment. University leaders explained that the local government is also making stronger commitments to environmental protection and pointed to the building of more green homes.

Leaders from the Communist Youth League's Central Committee, the Ministry of Education and the State Forestry Administration attended the event and showed their support. More than 50 media outlets including the People's Daily, People's Central Broadcasting Station, China Central Television Xinwenlianbo, China Education Television, and Beijing Television all made in-depth reports including interviews with many of the participating students.
