Green Long March Wins China's Prestigious Mother River AwardApril 23, 2009
On April 23, 2009, the eve of the 40th anniversary of the international Earth Day celebration, the Green Long March was awarded the Mother River Award, China's highest conservation recognition award, by the National Leading Group for the Protection of the Mother River during the 4th Mother River Award Ceremony held at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.
The National Leading Group for the Protection of the Mother River is designated by the central government to lead nationwide environmental protection efforts and to promote youth participation in environmental protection and conservation. It consists of key organizations and ministries including the National Committee of Youth League, the National People's Congress (NPC) Environment & Resources Protection Committee, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress (CPPCC) Committee on Population, Resources & Environment, the Ministry of Environment Protection, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the State Forestry Administration.
Awarded only once every two years, the Mother River Award recognizes organizations and projects that have made outstanding contributions to China's conservation and environmental protection. Out of 189 applicants, 7 individuals and 5 projects were chosen through an on-line vote of 7.5 million Chinese citizens.
NPC Vice Chairman Yan Junqi and CPPCC Vice Chairman Sun Jiazheng presided over the award ceremony. Yu Jishun, Secretary General of Beijing Forestry University Youth League accepted the award on behalf of the Green Long March and co-organizer Future Generations China. "
